Conifer 2-3in needle-like leaves in bundles of two. Needles are slightly twisted. Cones are woody, armed and about 1-2in long. Cones are serotinous and open to release seeds following low severity wild fire. It prefers rocky soils, moderate precipitation and can tolerate full sun or partial shade. It is native to high elevations in the eastern Cascades and across western United States.
